Julia Cassels

BORN: 1964

I work from life and my own sketches which are often a mass of energetic lines and vibrant shading. Images caught or on film tend to appear rather frozen. I work fast and stand at my easel as I feel it instils a sense of immediacy. My subjects are portrayed as if “caught in a glance”, unaware that I am there. Although watercolour is my favoured medium, I will often use charcoal, ink, mixed media or whatever is necessary to express the fluidity of the movement.

I exhibit regularly in the UK and my work can be found in private collections around the world. After my first book “How to capture Movement in your paintings” was published in 1996, I was invited to teach on painting safaris in Zimbabwe, and subsequently set up my own in Zambia. For many years I have designed Christmas cards for the charity Dr. Grahams Homes in India, and more recently for the Uganda Conservation Foundation.
