Margaret Devitt was born in South Africa and took her honours degree in Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand. Upon graduating she moved with her husband to Lesotho, where she started painting and ran a mohair weaving workshop, whilst her husband was involved in rural development. They spent many years working in remote parts of Africa and Asia where Devitt painted landscapes and drew the people she met. They later moved to London where she continued her training under Cecil Collins, and later with Robin Child, and spent several years at the London College of Printing. Her work encompasses landscape, figure, still life and abstract.
