Patricia Highsmith (1921-95) was an American novelist and short story writer famed for her psychological thrillers. ’Strangers on a Train’ (1950) was made into a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1951 and this resulted in Highsmith's increased popularity. ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’ (1955) was also turned into a film in 1999 with the screenplay by Anthony Minghella.
