Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-82) was an Italian general and republican, and leader of the Redshirts. He was involved with the unification of Italy and the historian A J P Taylor has said that he was ‘the only wholly admirable person in modern history’. Garibaldi’s wife Anita (1829-41) was his comrade-in-arms and a skilled horsewoman.
