This luminous new exhibition brings together over 40 oil paintings from Powell’s travels with family and friends over the past 18 months. Powell says: ‘I am often asked to explain my paintings but I do not use words. Words are for poets. I use colour.’
Working from her studio in the Cotswolds, Powell paints directly onto the canvas, effortlessly conveying a palpable sense of place and experience. Her figurative work often veers towards abstraction in form, though the pervading mood remains tangible. The colours are the first thing you notice – each painting glows with an unfettered charm.
Powell further explains: ‘I hope to be able to share my experiences and memories with my audience, through colour … the light coming through a washing line in Morocco, the sound of a boat’s sails on the sea, or even the simplicity of a pot of tea and peaches sitting on a kitchen table.’
