Dick (Richard) Turpin (1705-1739) was a famous English highway robber. By the early 1730s he had joined a gang of deer thieves. He is often depicted on his horse, Black Bess during a fictional 200 mile overnight ride from London to York where he was eventually executed for horse theft.
