Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950) was better known by his nom de plume, George Orwell. He was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic and considered himself to be a socialist. 'Animal Farm' (1945), a political fable involving farmyard animals, was based on Stalin's betrayal of the Russian Revolution. Four years later he published 'Nineteen Eighty-Four', a depiction of an imaginary totalitarian future after which words such as "newspeak" and "doublethink" entered the modern lexicon.
